"For thirty-eight years, Mistral has been ours."
That line opened the August 2026 Comings & Goings column from the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, written by SOHA President Matt Epstein. The column went on to report that the restaurant had closed, papered its windows for a renovation and set an August 10 reopening. Before it ended, it also covered a coffee shop at Fulton, a maker studio past Casa Vega and a rare-plant shop near Woodman. Read with the September column, it describes one short stretch of Ventura Boulevard filling up with places that do their business in daylight. The one long-running dinner room on that stretch has gone the other way and now stays open later.
The Sherman Oaks Street Fair will draw the biggest crowds on the boulevard this month, but it takes place on different blocks.
Sunday, Oct. 18, From Kester to Van Nuys
The Daily News lists the 34th Sherman Oaks Street Fair for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 18. Admission is free, and the fair has carnival rides, live music, a community performance stage, a pet zone, arts and crafts, and food vendors. The organizer's site puts it on Sunday, October 18, 2026, on Ventura Boulevard between Kester Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard. The organizer's pages don't give closure times or parking guidance, so the listed phone number, 818-906-1951, is the most direct way to get those details.
On a Sunday when the fair takes over its usual stretch, the blocks east of it make a useful second stop. Their addresses run from the 13400s into the 13700s, and most of the openings SOHA has reported since summer are there.
Mistral Reopened and Stayed the Same Restaurant
Los Angeles Magazine reported that Henri Abergel opened Mistral at 13422 Ventura Blvd. in 1988. Restaurateur Jonah Freedman and culinary director Josh Migdal, both formerly of Greekman's, took over around late October 2025, ran the place for several months, then closed it for a few weeks this summer for new millwork and red banquettes. Freedman told the magazine, "To regulars, both nothing is different and also everything is different," and added, "That was intentional."
SOHA's preview of the menu supports him. The tuna tartare, lump crab cakes, house-cured king salmon, Mistral Caesar and French onion soup all made it through the remodel. So did the duck, chicken, John Dory, rack of lamb, steaks and pastas. The one new dish SOHA flagged was a Mistral Burger.
The bigger change is when you can eat there. Los Angeles Magazine describes a night-owl offer of 25% off for diners without a reservation who are seated between 9 and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays or 9:30 and 10 p.m. on weekends. The same article described Henri's, the space next door, as a planned raw bar for cocktails and oysters that would turn into a cocktail bar later in the evening. No reporting found through Oct. 12 confirms that Henri's has opened.
So an established dinner room is reaching for later hours. Nearly every other business that has arrived on these blocks since summer runs in daylight.
What Changed Around It
The businesses on this stretch that opened, closed or announced plans since summer are listed below in address order, along with their status as of the latest local reporting.
| Address | Business | What it is | Status as reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ventura and Fulton | Blank Street Coffee at Fulton Crossing | Coffee shop anchoring a new mixed-use building, shops below and offices above | Open, with "a line out the door" in September |
| 13422 Ventura Blvd. | Mistral | French restaurant, opened in 1988 | Reopened Aug. 10 |
| 13443 Ventura Blvd. | LLAMA | All-ages art and play studio | Open, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| 13539 Ventura Blvd. | Boneyard Bistro | Smoked brisket and bistro menu | Closed Sept. 12 |
| 13702 Ventura Blvd. | Cornichon | French sandwich café | Proposed, no timeline |
| 13711 Ventura Blvd. | Florahound | Rare-plant shop | Open |
| Ventura and Woodman | Former Samos corner | Ludo Lefebvre project, early word is sandwiches | Lease signed, no name yet |
SOHA describes Fulton Crossing as a mixed-use building across from Casa Vega and says a vintage Airstream trailer was parked on the corner to mark the site. By September, the column described Blank Street as "swanky, design-forward," with a queue already forming.
SOHA lists art classes, sewing classes, workshops, birthday parties and adult "Grown-Up Nights" at LLAMA, and calls it "a charming idea for a block that could use more places to simply make something." The studio's open studio page says drop-in visitors can use paint, markers, clay and collage materials.
Florahound is in the storefront with the painted facade near Woodman. SOHA notes that the space was previously the Green Queen dispensary. The shop is built around horticulturist Leon Massoth, who spent decades growing rare tropical species from seed.
Sandwiches Are Coming to Woodman
The corner of Ventura and Woodman looks set to become a sandwich hub. In September, SOHA reported that Ludo Lefebvre of Petit Trois had signed a lease on the corner restaurant space Samos had occupied. The word was a sandwich concept, but Lefebvre had not yet chosen a name. On Oct. 7, What Now Los Angeles reported public filings for Cornichon, a French sandwich café planned for 13702 W. Ventura Blvd. The outlet said the applicant did not respond to a question about timing.
The same column described a "coffee-and-bagel war" between Sherman Oaks and Studio City. It reported that the longtime Le Pain Quotidien space is becoming a bagel shop. The operator and opening date have not been published. SOHA also counted more than thirty sushi restaurants on Ventura Boulevard and reported that one more is coming. Sumi Sushi is opening next to Burger She Wrote and planning its menu around a daily fish delivery.
The September column also noted a closure on the same blocks. Boneyard Bistro at 13539 Ventura Blvd. closed on Sept. 12 after more than twenty years. SOHA described a kitchen "that could do slow-smoked brisket and eclectic bistro fare with equal confidence." No replacement for that space has been reported.
On these blocks, then, a smokehouse closed and the Samos space changed hands. Their likely successors are two sandwich shops, a bagel shop, a coffee bar, a plant shop and an art studio. Mistral is the only one of these businesses reporting later evening hours.
Toward the Galleria, the Late-Night Plans Are Still Unconfirmed
West of the fair footprint, near Sepulveda, Sherman Oaks has its own cluster of announcements. Most of them are night-oriented, and none has been confirmed open as of Oct. 12.
- Gilbert Perez Bar, upstairs from Daisy Margarita Bar at 14633 Ventura Blvd. In its fall preview, Eater LA projected an October opening for Max Reis and Matt Egan's tropical rum bar. The bar takes its theme from the legend of Gil Pérez and will have a strict no-photography policy. One listing gave Oct. 8 as the opening date. The bar's own site invites guests to "Book a portal" but doesn't list hours or confirm that service has started.
- Hapa Haus at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, 15301 W. Ventura Blvd. This Hawaiian-leaning restaurant and bar will have golf simulators. In an April report from What Now, the owner was aiming to open in November. No later update has been published.
- Yama Sushi Marketplace at 15300 Ventura Blvd. #102G. What Now reported a late-summer target in April. The company's own locations list still leaves out Sherman Oaks.
Several of these projects may well open before the end of the year. As of mid-October, though, the confirmed openings on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks are on the Fulton-to-Woodman blocks, in a coffee bar, an art studio, a plant shop and a French dining room that seats walk-ins until 10 p.m. on weekends.
